Fibre Optic >> How Fibre Optic Broadband works

FTTC

Fibre Optic Broadband is also known as "Fibre to the Cabinet" or FTTC for short.

Simply put, the green street cabinets used by BT are linked to the exchange via Fibre Optic Cable instead of copper wire. Fibre Optic ensures that there is no loss in signal between the cabinet and the exchange, thus ensuring that faster broadband speeds are possible.

To ensure that broadband speeds are as fast as possible, the equipment which was previously housed in the local exchange is now moved to the green street cabinets.

The "last mile" from the cabinet to the premises remains copper cable for now.  However, there are plans to extend Fibre Optic to the Premises (FTTP) in the near future.
